4 Must Ask Questions for your Pediatrician Office: Infant

Appointment set for 1pm. Exactly 2 1/2 weeks after birth. The Second follow meeting was ready.

There were FOUR different measurements we were most interested in finding out.

  1. Weight
    • Is your baby gaining weight?
    • Many infants loose weight in the first few weeks, this is a normal healthy trend.
    • According to The Mayo Clinic, From birth to age 6 months, a baby might gain 5 to 7 ounces (about 140 to 200 grams) a week. Expect your baby to double his or her birth weight by about age 5 months.
  2. Length
    • Is your baby growing in length?
    • According to The Mayo Clinic, From birth to age 6 months, a baby might grow 1/2 to 1 inch (about 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters) a month.
  3. Head circumference
    • Is your babies skull expanding and growing to allow normal brain development?
    • Growth at any remeasure is a good sign. There are charts on the CDC website for growth by percentile
  4. Bilirubin
    • Is your babies liver at full power yet?
    • Most newborns will be jaundice for 2 to 4 weeks.
    • Remedy: Lots of indirect sunlight, eating and further development of your babies growing liver.

Team Building Exercise “Blow Out”!

It is on the pillows, it is on the couch, it even got on 3 different blankets… “Quick, I need your help… We are having a blow out”

Parents of new born children with 2 or 4 legs know the dangers of a poop “blow out!” When that pesky diaper, HUGGIES, does not contain the massive bowl movements our little gems put out… Follow the 3 C’s Contain, Communication, Cleanliness

My fiancé and I worked together in an attempt to contain the mess to the couch, a pillow and 3 blankets. Using our communication to move calm and fast to give support to each to each other. Dad helped clean with wipes and Mother took baby a bath! Team work makes the dreams work!

What we need for next time:

1. Chux pads: Absorbent pads used to catch all forms of fluids and waste.

2. Portable baby wipes container: All forms of cleaning materials within reach before embarking on your mission. Having moist and ready baby wipes is a must in this game.

3. Change of clothes! Once you have successfully cleaned your angel, it is time to re-set with a quick change of clothes… use an outfit with a ZIPPER, you will thank me later.

The challenges of a 10 day old infant are a steep learning curve but an amazing experience!!
